Tiarra Edmundson – Cotton Candy, 48″ x 48″ , Oil on Canvas, 2014

BC Children’s Hospital, including Sunny Hill Health Centre, delivers child and youth health and rehabilitation services and is the province’s major treatment, teaching and research facility for child health, with over 200,000 children cared for on an annual basis. Cotton Candy now resides permanently at the BC Children’s Hospital and I am honored to be placed in such a special location. My gratitude also goes out to all of the paramedics, nurses, doctors, volunteers and everyone working in administration at the BC Children’s Hospital.

How To Read the Paintings

Tiarra Edmundson – From Right to Left True North No.1, True North No.2, True North No.3, True North No.4

The two inch line in the center is a clean separation as to how to read the column. There are three slots and only two spheres above this line, and each sphere can be counted as “5”. If both spheres are raised, the number is “0” for that column ,

The bottom half of the separation can be explained as follows: there are five slots but only four spheres. Each of the spheres represent “1”. All four spheres pushed up would represent “4” or if only two are pushed up, this will represent the number “2”.

One must take into account the top and bottom to arrive at the correct figure for the column.

The abacus final number is read from right to left and follows traditional math placement theory…and is as follows, “ones”, “tens”, “hundreds”, “thousands” and so forth…

Tiarra Edundson explained

Here, I have blotted the empty slots to highlight the spheres. When the solid colour is consistent, that indicates it is a positive sphere. When the space is a negative slot, I paint in non-repeating, abstract forms and colours.

True North at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport

My latest body of work entitled True North is currently being featured in the Atrium at The Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel.

True North is comprised of four abstract paintings that have been inspired by abacus computations.

Paintings No.1 and No. 2 depict the geographical coordinates of Vancouver, (49 degrees North by123 degrees West)

Painting No.3 represents the year in which the installation was created (2015) and the fourth and final piece of the series represents the annual number of landings and takeoffs at Vancouver International Airport (312,228).

Tiarra Edmundson – 30″x30″, acrylic on canvas

For my paintings, I strive to achieve the geometric logic of science with the colourful, freedom of whimsy. My partner is an accountant by training and owns his own investment management firm and I am traditionally-trained in fine art and colour theory. We are polar opposites, as far as our career and education, but we share a passion for creativity and appreciate thoughtful and precise execution. You can often find myself and my partner flipping through finance articles in the newspaper or browsing photos in science magazines looking for inspiration for my next painting. We came across a photograph of the speed of light while looking for numbers on the laws of physics. Being both aesthetically pleasing as well as science specific “Light” soon took physical form on canvas.
